Assignment 2 - styles, conventions and techniques of music video

Part A)
Definitions:

  • Lyric interpretation: Lyric interpretation is where the music video is used to tell the audience a story about the music video and the lyrics in the song. This can be used to make the audience understand what the song is about and the music video.
  • Extending or consolidating song's meaning:  It means to have other meanings to the song rather than just one meaning and also to show the two different meanings in the music video. This can show the viewer that the song is not about one thing but actually about many or more than 1 thing. This adds an extra meaning for the viewer to try and understand.
  • Focus on performer: Focusing on the performer means it the camera will film more of the performer than any other person or thing in the music video. This can show the viewer more of how the performer is feeling in the music video as they can see them more in the video they can see the body language to see their emotion.
  • Lighting for mood: This is when the lights for the shot are dimmed or brightened or even changed in colour to create an atmosphere. This can make the viewer understand more on the feeling of the performer and the meaning of the actual song itself.
  • Allusion: This is when the song or video references something indirectly that makes the viewer want to know what it is. This makes the viewer curious and also it engages them to watch more of the music video so they can find out what it is.

Part B:

1) Special effects:

Kanye west - stronger

The music video uses a lot of different effects to make it visually pleasing. It appears that the the video uses a green screen at the start to show the thing Kanye was in. There are also some filters and flash lighting effects throughout the video.

2) Multi-mage:

Don Omar - Danza Kuduro ft Lucenzo

This image shows multi-mage which shows different images on the screen in one scene. There is a fair bit of this used in the music video which adds good effect to the video and makes it flow well.

3) Cutting to a beat:

 Eugy - dance for me

This music video uses the technique of cutting to a beat which is where the scene in the video changes on to the beat of the music. It adds a good flow to the video and makes people wanna dance more to the music.

4) Lip syncing and miming:

Shakira - hips don't lie

This music video uses lip sync, you can see this in the video as you can make out that she is not actually signing and they word are a little bit out of sync. This allows for pure recording of the video and then singing in two different parts to be added later.

5) Animation:

a-ha - take one me

This music video was one of the first ever to use animation in a music video. This added a whole new technique in the music and video industry. This adds a interesting effect that makes viewers want to watch the music video and grabs their attention.

6) Reference to other artist or includes another artist:

Juicy J - Ballin ft. Kanye West

This music video has a collaboration with another artist. The main artist of the song is Juicy J and the feature is Kanye West and they worked together in this song and music video.

Task c)

1) Illustrative:

twenty one pilots: Heathens

It shows illustrative techniques as the video crates a dark mood and can make the viewer feel a bit uneasy with the content in the video.

2) Interpretive:

Rihanna - Russian roulette
This music video is a good example of interpretive music as you cannot really tell what its about and people will have mixed ideas on what the video and song is about. It maybe be about a women who is trapped in a bad relationship and it feels like being in prison. It can make the viewers think and wonder.

3) Surrealist:

a-aha - take on me
This is an example of surrealistic music video. It is surreal as its something that you can't believe as its strange or unnatural because the video uses real life images alongside animated images which is out of the ordinary and also advanced for the time the song was released in.

4) Pastiche/Homage:

Wiz Khalifa - See you again
This is a tribute song to Paul Walker from the "Fast and Furious" movie franchise. It is a tribute song as its in memory of him as he passed away before the final release of the latest movie "Fast and Furious 7". The viewer can instantly know that if they know about the franchise and or they are a big fan of it. Otherwise the video can show the viewer that its a tribute because of the extended meaning to the song the video brings.

5) As-Live:

Jon Bellion - All time low
This music video a is a simple example of live music video. This is because the clips in the video are all taken from Jon Bellions latest tour "The Human Condition" based of the album he released just before. It shows him at his concerts doing his performance with the band on his tour of his album.

6) Parody:
The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey - "closer" parody
This music video is a clear representation of parody as its a parody of closer but changed lyrics and different people playing the characters in the video.

7) Animation:

Kanye West - heartless
This video is a good example of animation as the video is all cartoon animation type clips which is different to your normal music video.
